More Kidisms....

Me: It's almost time to leave, I still need to get dressed, brush my teeth and put my eyes.....
Boy #3: You're eye tacks in!
Me: (laughing hysterically) Yes, put my contacts in.

~~~
Me: Eat two more bites of your vegetables.
Boy #2: Oh mom, you make my life so HARD. (This from 6 year old)
~~~

Boy #3: Mom, I think one of the Danish has a headache. (One of our many egg laying hens)
Me: Oh yeah, why do you think that?
Boy #3: Because she ran into the fence with her head.
Me: You are probably right, she probably does have a headache.

~~~
Boy #1: Mom, I went outside to let the chickens out of the hen house guess what? Mr. D was taking a piggy back ride on one of the hens. So you know what I did? I kicked him off because she couldn't move.
Me: (In hysterics) Well, Mr. D is trying to make babies with her.
Boy #3: Oh, ooops. I won't do that again.
~~~

Boy #2: Mom, you're scaring me.
Me: How is that?
Boy #2: It feels like we are going to flip. (We are driving around in the jeep and I had the right side of the jeep on a slope so we were tipped to one side)
Me: We're okay, I won't flip the jeep.
Boy #3: If we did flip we would get flip sick.

An Apron and a Thank You!

About a month ago I joined the Garden Apron Swap put on by Shawnee and Lucy. The objective was to make a utility apron or a gathering apron for another person. It had to be sewn with love with a quality that would make a passing grade in a Home Ec. class.

I chose to make my partner a utility apron. It has 3 deep pocket which will be great for carrying around clippers, drip line emitters, seed packets, shovels, etc. I used a heavier duty material for the outside, which is the stripes, and a coordinating quilting weight material for the upper part of the apron. The colors are very spring like with pinks, greens, a bit of red, white and brown. I'm not sure if you can see it, but it has cupcakes all over it. Mmmm...........good. I also made it with super long ties so it can be wrapped around to the front.

With this package I added a shovel and some seed packets. I am sending my lucky partner some sugar pie pumpkin seeds, lemon cucumber seeds, radish seeds, and broccoli seeds. So happy planting to my partner!

On to the Thank You! This lovely bit of goodies is from my good friend Cookie Girl, if you don't know who she is you must visit. She has cookie recipes that she shares with all of us in bloggy land and they are To. Die. For.

She sent me some cake decorating bags and tips, a cook book put together by the members of her Church, some red candy foil, mini cupcake cups, blue coloring, alomond oil, and some fun goodies to melt into candies. Forgive me Cookie Girl if I forgot anything. When I got the package I tore into it and made the cupcakes I posted on The Apron Goddesses.

What Am I? A Flippin' Whale?

Well, it's official. I've been told that I am "middle aged". When the crap did that happen? It feels like yesterday that I was graduating high school and moving on to the next stage of life. And now I am middle aged?

I went to the dermatologist today because I have these things on my face. Bumps really, but I am a picker so they annoy me. Now I need to control my picking and accept that they are now a part of my appealing beauty. You know what they are? Barnacles....yeah, you know like the ones whales get, but different. Barnacles?! When did I turn into a whale and not realize it? How does this happen?

The dermatologist tells me that is common for people who are middle aged to get these and it's no big deal. And then he adds "You aren't that old", which I'm not and proceeds to tell me that he does see it in some young people...who are in their 20's. Hey, I'm still in my 20's! I guess I shouldn't shoot the messenger. I think I need to go have a good long talk with Father Time and Mother Nature. Who's with me?

Even The Birds Are HOT

We are under attack. The weather went from a mild 70's & 80's to a scorching 95 to 105. It is hot, hotter than Hades. Where did the weather come from? How do we go from a nice mild climate to HOT? Not sure, but it does. It's pretty bad when you wake up and already have boob sweat or ball sweat (depending on who you are).

So for the past two days we have been trying to stay cool in this crazy hot weather...with little success. I live in an old house that doesn't have central heat, nor does it have air conditioning. With any luck we will put in a window unit which really only cools off the living room. I guess it's better than nothing. When the window unit does go in it's because dear, loving hubby can't take the heat anymore...he is not fond of HOT weather. Back to the last two days....my house stays somewhat cool til about 2 and then it heats up and fast. We have been staying inside trying to stay cool, moving as slowly as a sloth so as not to produce heat from our movement.

Today the boys wanted to pull out the pool a friend gave us a few years ago. My BIL was home and together the boys pulled it out, cleaned it up, and proceeded to fill it up.....on his deck. Very redneck, hillbilly.....when you're that hot nobody even cares. The boys and their cousins had such a great time splashing, jumping, floating they didn't want it to end. They were very disappointed when I called them in for dinner. However, as soon as dinner was over they infiltrated Julia's deck and continued to enjoy the refreshingly cool water.

Apparently we weren't the only ones suffering the heat. Our birds were feeling it too. They look pretty funny when they are hot. They hold their wings out to the side, just like I hold my arms to the side in the truck with the AC full blast. They also have their beaks wide open and pant, almost like they just can't get oxygen quite fast enough. This is Rhodie, our Rhode Island Red, you can see his wings out and his beak is slightly open. Now picture all 15 birds like this. They stand as still as possible while they try to cool off.

Too Disgusting for You?

What is it with boys, okay kids, and boogies? We actually had a conversation about them, nose picking, and the infamous "snot rocket" which is also known as the farmer's blow.

Boy #2 will dig around in there and complain that he has too many boogies, if that is even possible. The problem is that he does so much digging that he makes the inside of his nose bleed, it scabs and then he is at it again thinking it is a boogie. He will also blow air in and out of his nose towards his brothers to see if he can speckle them with the vapors that come out. Boy #1 yells with serious protest...can you blame him? Boy #2 can be pretty disgusting at times.

Boy #1 likes to dig at story time. I can see him peripherally while I am reading and it just grosses me out. He is pretty good about stopping, but still. Boy #3 is just as bad as the other two. Yes, I know.....we all do it at some point, but they get out of hand. I just hope they don't do it in public the way they do it at home.

The new found talent of boy #2 is displaying his ability to do a "snot rocket". He has just figured out the technique and couldn't help but show it off yesterday.

"Hey Mom, watch this!"

He proceeds to do it, but ends up with a stringer (as I call it) down his lip. I took one look and laughed.....hard.

"Oh, yeah, that was a nice attempt at a snot rocket."

"Have you ever done one?"

"Yes, Boy #2 I have done them many times."

"When?"

"Oh, I do it when I am running and when I play soccer."

"Do you ever get stringers?"

"Sometimes."

Can't wait to see what other topics of discussion come up. There is never a dull conversation around here....with 3 boys I think everything is covered.

It all started with a seed

Back in January I started my garden. Crazy? Maybe. I don't have a green house and our combined families love to eat tomatoes. I won't buy the ones sold in the stores, they just don't compare. So this is what I started with, a few very small seeds. Aren't they cute?

Next came the planting of the seeds in Peet Pots.

Unfortunately I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture of all the cups full of dirt. I think you get the idea.

These are the tomatoes after they were transplanted to larger cups. Like my ant? He is guarding my tomatoes from uncertain disaster.

And these are just 2 out of 7 swanky tomato cages. My BIL mad the square one and my dear, loving hubby made the triangular one.

There are more cages, but I'm sure you get the idea. Now I just need to coerce my dear, loving hubby into making oh, about 15 more of these very sturdy, swanky tomato cages. After all spending money on those cheesy, thin wire cages is simply a waste.

More Memories

Reading Tara's post An Ode to Blogging at Too Much Information got me thinking about life in general. I have all these memories, but nothing written down. I do journal, however it is more of a venting journal since I can't just go run at the drop of a hat. Before kids, my way to vent was to go for a good run. I am now realizing that I should document more of what I did as a kid and share those stories with my boys now that they are old enough to appreciate them. They have been to my hometown many times, but I have not taken the time to show them where I played as a child. We are generally too busy visiting family and going to our favorite family spots, such as the Sweet Shoppe and best local bakery in town. Next time I will have to drive them around and aquaint them with my old childhood haunts.

The Babysitter's House: my home away from home

My mom and my pop both worked, so my sister and I went to "The Babysitters", at least that is what we called it then. Now we call it a Home Daycare. Jeanne, the babysitter, was older than my mom, but not quite as old as a grandmother. Times were very different back then. The older kids were allowed to go to the hill (at the end of her street) and play without adult supervision. The hill was like an escape, this is where I truly felt creative (and I am not very creative). I would go there and play on this bunch of rocks, that looked like teeth to me, and just hang out. Other kids would go too and we would play as if we were in the jungle......at the tender age of 7 and 8 it was like a jungle, lots of trees, bushes, wild flowers, and tons of poison oak. There wasn't a time I didn't come home without getting the nasty rash that followed. Later in life I discovered that I get it so bad that contact with the pollen is enough to trigger the burning itch and nasty red rash. Any way, another favorite was to get cardboard and climb to the top of the hill when the grass was dry and "sled" down. We all came home with ugly bumps and bruises, but none of us cared because it was such a great time. When we got tired we would go to the west side of the hill and look at the view. You could see most of the town, all the way to the freeway. It was beautiful.

The Hill: my own personal backyard

Sadly, many years ago, a family cut off the top of the hill to make way for their house. I don't blame them, the view is lovely and they probably enjoy it every day. But gone are the days of childhood fantasies as well as the freedoms that we were able to enjoy many years ago.

And this is my childhood home. My mom still lives here.
