B*U*T*FUL Chickens & a Turkey

Last week I took the boys to Grandma and Grandpa's house because dad was doing some demo work close by. We got to see our new chickens, up close and personal. If you haven't seen our sad, sad chicken have a look:

A pretty pathetic excuse for a chicken right? Sadly, since we have had to keep them in their pen (because of the garden) they look even worse. This one you see above now is missing feathers on her neck. She appears to be the lowest on the pecking order so they all pluck her feathers.

These are the same breed as the one above. They are Barred Rock chickens and this is how they should look. The one on the right is a rooster in the making. The two on the left are the hens. Aren't they beautiful?

The one in the middle that is a light brownish red is called a Buff Orpington.

And this little gem is our turkey. Isn't she pretty? I can't wait till they make thier appearance here. The kids are going to be so excited.

This only means that it is that much closer for the "other" chickens to be executed. I am still talking myself into doing the deed. A friend of mine showed me a video of when she executed her turkeys for Thanksgiving. I have to admit I squealed. I know it has to be done and the thought of it doesn't bother me, but the act of following through might me a bit disturbing.

dear, dear Suzi, prepare yourself- my husband helped slaughter turkeys one year and he couldn't eat turkey that Thanksgiving.

Chickens are a little easier, but my sister in law sometimes feels like she's losing a friend; my bro in law has had to start a poultry cemetery in the back corner....

I'm curious.... Will Mr Turkey be attend Thanksgiving dinner on a platter or as a guest?

It's weird to think that butchering chickens was common practice before supermarkets appeared.

The new birdies are definitely prettier than the bare bottomed ones!

We have too many roosters for our flock presently. We are trying to figure out that to do- I think we're too chicken ;) to kill them ourselves.
